It appears that Russian Space Program administrators have armed the ISS crew in fears for their safety should they have to abandon ship only to land for example, in Knoxville's Fort Sanders community after 03: 00 Zulu only to be murdered by the natives. Or should they drift Eastwards from Knoxville, some good shooting could reduce the risk of the astronauts getting eaten by bears in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. After the trauma of falling from space, and fending off a bear attack, the astronauts would be arrested by the Park Service for going armed in a National Park.
Former NASA engineer Jim Oberg has a great quote:
"...crews would be safer if the gun was locked up or left on Earth".
Yes Jim, the crews would be safer in the station without a gun, but I would hesitate to say that their lives might depend on having it, should they be forced to land in a random location on the slightly less idyllic planet below.
A person who can not be trusted with a gun, can not be trusted with a space station.

Not to worry, if the Ruskies did have to crash land, the gun would be in the hands of the political officer, so as to improve morale of the crew. I'm more impressed that the Ruskies give guns to their space flight crews, while the US crews get a short saw-backed machete.
To all you know-it-all's...
Many moons ago a Soviet spacecraft landed far away from where it was supposed to, up in the forest and no one around to help the guys out.
Well, there were wolves and bears in the forest that almost ate the flight crew and they had to live in the spacecraft on the ground for about a week before rescuers found them. That means they couldn't go anywhere, make a fire, cook, poop, exercise, nuthin'. So, the Sov's decided to put a gun onboard so their crews could defend themselves should that ever happen again. I'd say that was a smart move. So all you liberal, twinkle-toe, homo-whipped, pussyized, girlie-men get a life and shut up!
The Sov's (now Russians) know what they are doing to protect their flight crews. P.S.-they also carry a bottle of vodka to relieve the stress after landing and celebrate their having survived the mission.
